Description

This is my Production 2 Film for my CTAN555 class here at the University of Southern California. Unfortunately, I'm unable to post the actual film on a public website because USC owns the copyright to my film, however they have no claim to my storyboard! And since my storyboard pretty much ended up being production stills, here's a bunch of my production stills that also parallel as my storyboard.

I'm posting this here because I'd like to know who is interested in seeing the film?

I have two options for those interested in seeing it... One, you can note me, and I'll link you to the film on my website where it is currently hidden unless I link people to it (Please do! I'm proud of this film and I'd like to show it to people, especially my watchers). And/or, I can livestream my film for anyone interested as well. I just would like to know a good time to livestream it. I thikn the best option for now would be for you to just note me and I'll link you to my film.

Just FYI though, I am going to work a little more on it, tweaking a few things like light levels and stuff, here and there... and re-animating the part where it goes all black in the middle because that actually was a post-production last-minute add-on because the rendering plugin for After Effects' Tinderbox licenses were down the night before it was due. The licenses will be back in January, so I'll touch it up then.

So yeah, note me if you'd like the link to the film on my website. USC said it's okay if I direct people to see the film... I'm just not allowed to post it on a public website like YouTube, MySpace, etc, where people in the general anonymous masses can view it.

Some things to know about this. The film took about 700 hours to make. I built that tree from scratch (SEE HERE: [link] ) using a branch, brown clay, and hydrangea basil leaves. I also took it apart live in front of a camera. I shot the film in my garage against the blue screen, and painted the tree with green screen paint. Although the blue screen key worked fine, the green screen key didn't work well, so I ended up rotoscoping 40,000 frames.

Many of the desert textures are stock imagery thanks to *night-fate-stock. I would have shot the desert imagery on location here in California, but I unfortunately didn't have any time to drive out to the desert. It took an entire weekend just setting up for my film shoot in the garage (and also, the Sony EX-1 camera was such a hassle to take out in general, having to make a reservation 2 weeks in advance and having to come pick it up within a window frame of several hours, it exhausted me just thinking of trying to take it out again for a desert shoot), and I thank Willie Williams for helping me through the shoot. I couldn't have finished it without him.

My faculty advisors were Candace Reckinger and Mike Patterson (many of you know him for animating the A-ha video "Take On Me", but many more of you will know him for animating Paula Abdul's music video Scat Cat).

And as a last word, I hate After Effects. I hate it so. so. so. much. But unfortunately there isn't anything better out there for this kind of animation. But I think I got my first few gray hairs (well, not really, but if I do get them, I'll know why) from sitting around tapping my fingers waiting for renders to finish just so I could see 10 frames of animation at a time. I animated BLINDLY the entire time. It was so frustrating. And renders took from 16 - 36 hours to do. I wasted entire weekends just sitting around waiting for it to render. Thank god I have my old laptop to work on for other projects too. But i the end, I was sleeping at school and using 3 computers at a time to get this done. It was craziness. I don't know how I could have gotten through it without my Japanese futon fold up mattress at school to get me through the nights, and my new Nintendo Wii to get me through the renders. A special thank you shout out goes to Denny's... because often, that was the only place open for me to eat my one meal of the day for the past month. Needless to say, now that the school year is over, I've thoroughly enjoyed cooking again.
