Chains of Hatred by lauraneato Chains of Hatred by lauraneato
Since 836 people had already favorited my other version of this... I figured I'd just submit a new version. I don't want to potentially anger anyone who favorited the last version with an update to completely swap out the other image. lol.

My original image is here:

I just got super awesome advice from someone on MangaHelpers who figured out how to make the image even -more- awesome (at least in my opinion), and to achieve the look that I TRIED to achieve but didn't know how (but now I know how!), so here's the update with what I WANTED everyone to see in the image, but levels were getting in the way before and washing all my color out.

Version 2 of Captive, this time "Chains of Hatred"... for all of you who see things metaphorically : P

I feel silly having two versions of this now.... Oh well : P Consider this an "alternate take" on the original... just applying the filters a fan made on my image that I enjoyed the look of. : P

Just compared the two of them and this is by far the better! I like how the lighting has changed, to focus more on Sasuke and how (to me) the the window is a symbol of freedom that he just can't reach. The paper bombs -its what I always call em- are darker but adds more to my eyes than them being brighter in the old image.

Very good job!

hey dude, awesome stuff, even the original, i also wanna make my drawings look like this, i'm pretty good at drawing, but i've only started on photoshop cs4 and wanna get my colouring done to this level of skill, maybe even further, do know of a good website that shows step by step tutorials of how to go about colouring like yours?
thanx :D

There are a few tutorial-oriented groups here on DA, this being one of them: :icontutorialcafe: I don't know if any of the tutorials really helps anyone color like me, though. I don't have one single recipe for coloring. I always change it up a bit, and I approach coloring differently for every single image. I've attempted to make a tutorial before, but it isn't really something that's easy to follow, and that was a one-time only coloring method. I never colored that way again, so I rarely link people to that method. In all honesty, the best thing to do is watch me on Skype. I've had a handful of people watch me live, and it's helped them... But to tell the truth, the best way that I've been able to help people has been through gradual advice. I see their works, I critique it, I may even give them some tips on how I'd approach it, and they improve upon them. I don't think anyone really learns by a copycat method. Learning to color is a very conceptual skill. In order to imagine lighting... that's something that you can either do, or not do. A lot of it is based on practice, a lot of it is based on reference (or what you've learned from reference) and a lot of it is based on creativity. If a realistic photograph always got the artist's idea right, there would not be any need for Photoshop to begin with.

It's funny, a lot of people throughout my lifetime here have said that I color really well, but I don't personally believe that I'm all that great. I quickly get my colors down, and post it because I don't like to be bogged down by a color wheel. I'm mostly interested in communicating an idea. Most of my images tell a bit of a story, and the color is only really meant to complement it. Perhaps that's also why my coloring approach is so different every time. I need to modify it in order to best communicate and marry it to the story in the image, and none of my stories are the same.

thanx so much for the advice.
i'll try practicing alot more now without having to look at how others go about colouring, but seeing as though you're willing to give me an honest critique on my work, when i do post a drawing, i hope you get to see it, tips and further advice would be much appreciated.

Thanx again.

P.S i was just looking around for someone to help me with colouring, but i did take note of the depth of your drawing rather than just the colouring...strangely enough, i actually have a drawing very similar to yours lol, another reason why i was so interested in it, i'll upload it soon.

Definitely achieved the Uchiha bedroom eyes to perfection. Naruto would be so turned on lol..

but srsly....I think you also made the contrast stronger, right? Coz it appears more dramatic. Which is very good. Love the defiance in his eyes <3

:iconlauraneato:
lauraneato Featured By Owner Mar 17, 2010
I didn't boost the contrast, but I did allow for the image to lose information to the darkness. I was inspired by Dreamworks' "How to Train a Dragon" in which they used chiaroscuro in some parts of the movie. Their new director of photography basically told them that even though they textured everything and lit everything, and modeled everything, it was *okay* to let objects fall to the darkness. Sometimes the blackness is more powerful than if people can see every pixel. It adds to the dramatic lighting and the atmosphere of the scene. So... even though a lot of my wall detail is lost in this version, I don't mind. It simply leads the eye to focus more on the light and where the light falls : )

I see...I saw the trailer for that movie...
I don't wanna pass any judgment but it sounded
a bit generic. Maybe it was the trailer's fault.

But I agree on the effects, chiaroscuro is one of the
niftiest dramatic techniques out there.
